There are still a few music films to catch at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
So far I have managed to see four films in the
Backbeat series of music film at MIFF:
Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten,
Scott Walker: 30th Century Man,
John Peel's Record Box,
My Name Is Albert Ayler and Anton Corbijn's Ian Curtis bipioc
Control.
I had the chance to talk to director Stephen Kijak and will feature a podcast of that soon.
Corbijn's film on the life of Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis brillaintly captured the mood of the times and Sam Riley's portrayal of Curtis had just the right edge to it.
Julien Temple's Joe Strummer doco was spectacular in its production values and must be one of the most expensive docos ever made. When he introduced the film, Temple admitted he had found it difficult to make a film about a friend and with refreshing honesty - when asked why he had included interviews with Bono and Johnny Depp - he said, 'For the money, mate!' I assume the film will be released to the cinema later this year.
STILL TO COME:
Thursday August 9 (9.10pm) - Made In Jamaica
Sunday August 12 (7.30pm) - Scott Walker: 30th Century Man
Control is on again next weekend but is sold out.
You can also catch the Mirrorball series of video clips and the Orbit series of new Australian and New Zealand clips.
